Schwan died in 1894 According to a gentleman named Frank Cavill, who was familiar with lonely graves in the goldfields, "Schwan's mates brought him in from Hawk's Nest suffering from fever, Christmas '94. He was delirious and talked incessantly about stacks of gold and looking for the coast. Schwan was doctored up at Williams's pub, but he pegged out and was buried opposite the Caledonian mine. A week later, Charlie Northmore brought his mate Simms (Timms) in from Niagara. Northmore went to Coolgardie for medicine. When he returned a few days later, Simms (Timms) had breathed his last. Simms (Timms) was buried alongside Schwan."
